Gais is another one of the incredible artists in residence at the Heesterveld HARRT Apartment. He is one of the most amazing spirits I have ever met and it shows in his artwork.

Born in one of the most violent favelas of Rio, Gais started his graffiti career as a pixador, still as a teenager. Later, in the 90’s, he founded together with other artists one of the first graffiti crews from Rio, Nação Crew. The crew is still active in Rio, and develops social projects with Caramundo for young people in the favelas. The collective is also responsible for the first gallery totally focused on graffiti and street art in Rio.

Gais is a self-taught artist. When asked about his influences he likes to say that he´s not inspired by other artists, but by the streetlife itself. His shapes and forms escape the usual and the obvious and create a new perspective in graffiti art.
